Everyone’s favourite plumber and his perpetually distressed damsel are set to return to the silver screen next week.
The Super Mario Bros. Movie is set to be released on April 5 and is hoping to turn the tides for the franchise, which has become notorious for its ill-fated 1993 film adaptation.
The ensemble voice cast includes Chris Pratt as Mario, Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach, Charlie Day as Luigi, Jack Black as Bowser, Keegan-Michael Key as Toad, Seth Rogen as Donkey Kong and Fred Armisen as Cranky Kong.
Sebastian Maniscalco, who voiced Mario and Luigi in the Mario games will have cameo roles throughout the film. Produced by Illumination, Universal Pictures, and Nintendo, and distributed by Universal, it has been directed by Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic from a screenplay by Matthew Fogel.
Depending on the success of this film, Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa has said the company is interested in producing more animated films in the future, and reports say that a Donkey Kong spin-off film starring Seth Rogen might already be in the works.
