A unique docuseries examining the familial relationship of one of the most celebrated rappers of all time with his mother is set to start streaming this weekend.

The five-part series Dear Mama will premiere on Friday, April 21 on FX and will be streamed the following day on Hulu.

The premiere will include the first two episodes, with a new one coming weekly after that.

Created by Allen Hughes, the documentary will feature never-before seen or heard footage of Tupac Shakur and his mother Afeni Shakur.

“Wherever possible, we tried to find archival footage that hadn’t been seen, so there’s a lot that we have in the five parts,” Allen added.

“There’s also audio that’s never been heard. And not just some of his acapellas and vocals, there is a lot of stuff of Tupac from his baby years that had never been seen.

“For Tupac superfans, I believe that two of the most important things in the project are the never-seen-before. But most importantly, you get to understand why he made certain decisions.”

Tupac’s mother, who passed away in 2016, was an American political activist and member of the Black Panther Party, who went on to found the Tupac Amaru Shakur Foundation after Tupac was killed during a gang-related shooting incident stemming from the East Coast–West Coast hip hop rivalry in the 1990s.

Allen serves as executive producer, writer, and director along with executive producer and writer Lasse Järvi and executive producers Quincy Delight Jones III, Staci Robinson, Nelson George, Charles King, Peter Nelson, Adel “Future” Nur, Jamal Joseph and Ted Skillman.

The five-part docuseries is produced by A Defiant Ones Media Group Production
and An Amaru Entertainment Production in association with MACRO and DreamCrew Entertainment.
