Sculptor Sudeep Deshpande who has completed two decades of art and design is staging an expressive exhibition featuring the evolution of his work .. one layer at a time.

Resonance Unlayered, being held on the ground floor of Harbour Gate within the Bahrain Financial Harbour (BFH), is the painter’s 11th solo exhibition and boasts 20 artworks created with acrylic, charcoal and enamel paint on canvas.

“The inspiration behind this exhibition is my consistent and continuous journey and life in totality that has urged me and brought me to a point where I should keep on expressing my art, but with the appropriate medium,” said Sudeep, a Bahrain Art Hub member and founder who has been living on the island for 14 years.

“As some thoughts are expressed in words and are shaped in poetry, some emotions need a certain dimension that is executed in space, design and sculpture. Here, some thoughts have sought shelter on my canvas. My process of ‘unlayering’ my subject matter is what people will be experiencing in this exhibition.”

Fellow artists and invited guests admired his work during the opening held on November 2.

Renowned Bahraini artist Abbas Al Mosawi and writer and director Anupam Ramesh Kinger were also in attendance as chief guests at the event that happens to be during a year that Sudeep says is ‘quite special’ for him.

“2023 is special as I complete 20 years in my career— in my journey through art and design,” explained the Indian architect, who has his own design firm.

“Just as the theme of the exhibition suggests, looking back in time with all the emotions and the thought process of going through it...it became important for me to express the transition and progression of my moods and various life situations on to my canvas.

“And in doing so, here we see a retrospective of some important moments of my life turned into art.”

Sudeep had graduated in architecture in 2003 from Pune University in India and comes from an artistic family. He was inspired by his father Dr Sudhir, a sculptor and painter who passed away in 2017 and was enlisted in the Guinness Book of Records for the world’s tallest and heaviest metal sculptures from the year 1989-1999.

“He was a self-taught artist who devoted his life to art and he strongly influenced me,” said Sudeep. “I have been actively involved in showcasing my work in India and Bahrain for the past 20 years. I have held several solo and group exhibitions and have organised art exhibitions with various organisations here in Bahrain — 34 exhibitions.

“I also represent an art group in Bahrain called In Art World (IAW), whose only objective is to give opportunity, recognition and motivation to artists who are committed, passionate and serious towards their art.”

Meanwhile, Sudeep’s artwork has been featured in various organisations, hotels and financial hubs as part of their private collections.

One of his paintings was also published as a book cover for author and National Award winner Nivedita Roy.

Sudeep’s exhibition runs until November 23.
