A holiday classic may soon have a sequel in the works.

American film and television producer and actor Gary Goetzman has said that he has his sights set on doing a sequel to Polar Express (2004), during an interview with ComicBook.com.

It has been 20 years since the first Polar Express was released and Gary teased that the second movie could go ‘even further’ regarding animation and detail.

“So, they all take time and that’s okay because we don’t mind things going slowly,” said Goetzman.

“But that is trying to be worked out now, for sure, Polar 2, yes.”

The 2004 animated Christmas adventure fantasy film is based on the 1985 children’s book The Polar Express, written by Chris Van Allsburg. The movie was the first of its kind to use a digital capture style for its animation and was listed in the 2006 Guinness World Records.

Digital capture style is a technology that blends real life and animation.

Set on Christmas Eve, the film tells the tale of a young boy who is coming to an age where he doubts Santa Claus’ existence. That is until he boards the Polar Express, a magical train destined for the North Pole.

The train takes him and other young children on a magical journey to strengthen their belief in Santa Claus.

Recognised for its technological innovation, the film which starred Tom Hanks, grossed $314.2 million at the worldwide box office.

Other cast members included Ashly Holloway, Nona Gaye, Hayden McFarland, Peter Scolari, Jimmy Pinchak, Matthew Hall, Daryl Sabara and more.

In December 2023, fans were anxiously awaiting an official announcement about the possibility of a second film when a Polar Express poster began to circulate online. Although fake, the poster had sparked a frenzy, with fans hoping it was real.
