Plot: Paul is a school teacher who is disliked by his students, his fellow faculty and the headmaster. With no family and nowhere to go over Christmas holidays in 1970, Paul remains at school to supervise students unable to journey home. After a few days, only one student holdover remains -- a trouble-making 18-year-old named Angus, a good student whose bad behavior always threatens to get him expelled. Joining Paul and Angus is head cook Mary whose son was recently lost in Vietnam. These three different shipwrecked people who form an unlikely Christmas family share comic misadventures during two snowy weeks in New England.
The film received Five Academy Award nominations this year, including Best Picture, Best Actor and Best Supporting Actress, as well as nominations for seven BAFTA Awards. It won two Golden Globe Awards for Best Actor and Best Supporting Actress.
