KIND-HEARTED skaters are coming together today for some festive fun as they hope to raise funds in support of the Mission to Seafarers.

The St Christopher’s Cathedral is organising the ninth Annual Charity Christmas Ice-Skating this afternoon, from 2pm to 4pm, at the Funland Ice Rink near the Bahrain National Museum.

“This event has become a steadfast date in many people’s Festive calendars and we love to see a mixture of old and new faces each year,” Sara Axtell, organiser for the event, told GulfWeekly.

“And it’s wonderful that we can raise funds for the Mission to Seafarers whilst providing the chance for people to have so much fun.”

Last year, approximately 80 skaters glided together, and the cathedral was able to raise BD185 - a number they are hoping to exceed this year with more social media exposure.

The cost, including skate hire, is BD5 per person or BD15 per family, payable at the door.

All proceeds will go towards services provided for seafarers and the Mission to Seafarers organisation.

“The funds raised through this event will support Mission to Seafarers’ seasonal initiatives, including providing gift packages for occasions such as Bahrain National Day, Christmas and New Year,” Mission to Seafarers Bahrain chaplain Father Franklin Isaac explained.

“These packages are a way to show gratitude to seafarers and to encourage them as they spend these special occasions far from their families.

“We invite the community to join this exciting event and contribute to supporting the welfare of seafarers.”

Mission to Seafarers is a global charity that provides practical, emotional and spiritual support to the 1.5 million seafarers who work tirelessly to transport goods across the world, with operations in more than 200 ports across 50 countries.

Services include ship visits, drop-in centres, emergency assistance and advocacy for seafarers’ welfare.

In Bahrain, the organisation has been helping seafarers for more than 25 years.

A centre operates at the Khalifa Bin Salman Port too allowing sailors to enjoy refreshments, books, recreational activities, Internet and phone facilities and to spend time away from their vessels.

In addition, the mission provides support in labour disputes, connecting seafarers with professional help and legal advice through local expertise and contacts.

The centre also helps seafarers stay connected with their families and provides mental health counselling, if needed.

Skaters are welcome to don their most festive wear including Christmas jumpers and hats, as well as bring some snacks and warm drinks.
