The British Council in Bahrain this week awarded the winners of the ‘Climate Change’ drawing competition at its premises in Manama.
Nigel James Fernandes, nine, a student of the Quality Education School, and Amal Al Basha, 12, a student of the Sumaiya School for Girls picked up the main prizes in the contest which had a global warming theme.
Nigel described his thoughts through an image of the earth being toasted over a little fire. “When I hear the word warming, I immediately think of something cooked or grilled, like my mom does in the kitchen,” he said.
“My first thought was to draw a fire and put our earth on it as if it were being cooked with no one to take care. My cousin in Canada said that this year they had had very little snowfall as a result of global warming.”
Amal’s painting outlined the different factors of global warming, saying: “The grey waves around the world resemble the effects pollution has on the atmosphere and by that poisoning the earth and everything around it.”
The winners were each presented with a certificate and professional arts supplies worth BD100. The prize winning drawings are on display until the end of the month.
