Dear Betsy, What can be done with a horrible nose? I hate my ugly nose it is too big and long and I want a small cute nose.
I am 17 and have always felt ugly. My father says surgery is too expensive and I am a student and don’t have any money. I even wear fake glasses to try to hide it a bit and feel I just want to stay at home in my room. VCJ
Dear VCJ, We are never satisfied with ourselves. Even the most beautiful woman in the world will tell you there are things she hates about herself. The trick here is to start playing up your good features and playing down your less than perfect ones. Fake glasses might feel like a good way to hide, but you are also hiding your eyes. This is not good as everyone has something beautiful about their eyes and they are a very powerful communication tool too. Experiment with simple eye make-up and have your eyebrows shaped professionally. Corrective make-up techniques can also help to give the illusion of a shorter nose – apply a dark shade of foundation just at the tip of the nose. If it is wide and bulbous you can also apply a little darker foundation at the sides. Sometimes if your eyes are close-set this can make your nose appear bigger, so apply an off-white highlighter or matt eye-shadow to the inner corners of your eyes, right up to your eyebrows and under your eyes, to create a more wide-eyed look. Talk to your hairdresser as some hairstyles can exaggerate a long nose (long, straight and parted in the middle) and some can help shorten it (a variation of a short bob with volume at the sides). The important thing to remember is to be subtle with the corrective make up and experiment with your best friend, who will be honest with you. Cosmetic surgery is not a magic wand that will make you instantly happy and beautiful. It also comes with certain risks and a lot of discomfort and does not necessarily turn out the way you thought it would. Focus on being the best person you can be. I happen to find big noses attractive, and I am not alone, so keep that in mind.
