Two Bahrain-based PGA golf professionals travelled more than 200 kilometres into the desert interior of Saudi Arabia this week to conduct golf clinics for employees of the Saudi Aramco oil company.

Chris Kelby, head teaching professional at Riffa Views's Royal Golf Club and his colleague, Colin Ferguson, will spend one day a month for the next three months in Udhailiyah teaching at the company's sand golf course there.

"The management at Saudi Aramco has been asking to borrow us for the past couple of years but we have always been too busy to be able to help," explained Kelby. "However, with the temporary closure of our own club while the course is being reconstructed to a design by Colin Montgomerie, now is a great time to be able to oblige them and give their residents some help with their games."

In addition to conducting beginners' golf clinics for juniors and ladies during their visit, the professionals also gave individual golf lessons to regular golfers in the community. A rules and etiquette clinic and golf quiz were held in the clubhouse in the evening to round off the pros' first visit.

"We were really pleased with the response to our visit and were made to feel very welcome by all on the compound," concluded Kelby. "We allocated 10 slots each for individual lessons and they were all filled weeks in advance. We look forward to an equally successful visit at the end of March."
