BAHRAIN is set to secure a stable supply of rice amidst global dwindling stocks and increasing prices.

It signed an agreement with a major Thai exporter, which Industry and Commerce Minister Dr Hassan Fakhro said would benefit needy families the most.

He said talks were being held with Thai officials about Bahrain setting up its own rice plantation in the Asian country.

The government also hopes to form a joint public or private sector company to help the country meet the demand for basic food products.

Dr Fakhro said officials were also studying the possibility of similar partnerships with firms in the Philippines.

The minister signed the deal with Rice Miller Association during a five-day visit to Thailand last week aimed at strengthening trade and investment links between both countries.
