THE adrenaline-fuelled Think Pink month of October finally came to an end with the culmination of the gala dinner at Radisson SAS hotel where 400 people attended the event to show support for the cause.

Tickets for the hugely popular annual dinner were sold almost four weeks in advance and proved a great success and marked a fitting climax to this year's Think Pink's activities on the island.

"So far Think Pink has amassed over BD30,000 and donations are still pouring in. We will donate the entire amount towards the end of the year to Bahrain Cancer Society (BCS) where it will be used solely for breast cancer. Last year, Think Pink donated BD34,000 to BCS which was used to fund the free mammography drive on the island," said Jules Sprakel, founder of Think Pink in Bahrain.

"What was great about Think Pink this year was that apart from support from different corporations, children got involved and the spirit of the community was apparent all through the month," she added.

Pakistan School in Isa Town made a human ribbon where 300 girls were involved wearing pink scarves sponsored by the Pakistani Women's Association (PWA). This was certainly a new and unique initiative on the island and the message of awareness and self examination was delivered to 2,500 mothers via pamphlets in Urdu and English.

Countless other schools across the island pitched in by raising money for Think Pink and companies both big and small supported the cause by hosting awareness lectures and making donations.

Gyms and fitness centres played their part by hosting a Think Pink open day where proceeds were handed to the health charity champions. "I think awareness featured high this year as everyone is more aware of early detection, the disease and its implications. It has to really transcend beyond wearing the pink ribbon," Ms Sprakel said.

GulfWeekly marked the beginning of Think Pink month by featuring racing star Hamad Al Fardan in a pink thobe and ghutra to show support for the cause. His thobe was donated to the organisers and it will now be framed as part of a collection of Think Pink memorabilia.
