Riffa and Busaiteen lift titles

BUSAITEEN and Riffa were the overall winners of the senior and under-16 titles, respectively in the Cross Country Championship, organised by the Bahrain Athletics Association (BAA) this week.

The championship, which was the last cross country event of the season, consisted of a four-km race for under-16s besides a competition for seniors over a distance of eight kilometresm.

Athletes from seven clubs - Al Hala, Riffa, Umm Al Hassam, Busaiteen, Al Shabab, Budaiya and Muharraq - took part in the event which started from the National Stadium in Riffa heading towards the Bahrain Football Association grounds and back to the starting point.

Busaiteen took the seniors' team title, edging Al Hala who came second overall while Al Shabab were third. Fourth place went to Budaiya, who were followed by Riffa. Individually, Busaiteen's Ma'ali Tawer raced to victory, leaving behind Ahmed Abdulsalam of Al Hala in second place while Ala'a Abdulqader of Busaiteen finished third.

Riffa Club junior athletes followed suit, winning the under-16 race, followed by Al Hala in second place, with Budaiya, Muharraq, Busaieen, Al Shabab and Umm Al Hassam coming in third to seventh, respectively .

Riffa athletes took firm control of this section and dominated the podium with Hisham Naji winning first place. His teammates Wesam Ali, Mohammed Naji and Wafed Mothana took the next three places, followed by Al Hala's Abdulla Mohammed in fifth place.

The event was held under the patronage of BAA president Shaikh Talal bin Mohammed Al Khalifa who honoured the top five athletes in each category at the prize-distributions ceremony.

Shaikh Talal also presented valuable awards to the top athletes in the Under-19 and Under-14 Cross Country Championship which was held earlier to mark Bahrain's National Day celebrations.

The event featured under-19 and under-14 categories as Al Hala dominated the under-19 section, winning the top three positions through Abdulla Mohammed, Abdulrahman Naji and Abdulla Taj.

In the under-14 event, Riffa took all top three spots with Hisham Naji finishing first and followed by Wesam Sadeq and Wafed Muthana in second and third place.
