How climate and water affect your hair

Many expatriates become aware of increased hair fall when living in a new climate and country but if this is happening daily it does not make for a confident start to the day.

Understanding Your Hair

It is normal to lose between 50 and 100 hairs every day. There may also be a period of increased shedding every three months or so, which is a preparation for new growth. So, when you see a few hairs on the shower floor, don't panic.

In the Gulf, most countries, including Bahrain, rely heavily upon desalinated water which can damage the hair shaft causing it to break. So what is often perceived as hair fall is in fact hair damage. In a study by Arden Healthcare, UK, samples of hair fall were collected in countries using desalinated water. It was found that a larger percentage was damaged hair that had broken off, rather than from the natural cycle of hair fall.

Desalinated seawater has its own problems as increasing populations are polluting seawater causing additional bacteria growth. As a result, treatment plants must add more chlorine to kill bacteria and then add lime (a calcium compound) to help control the chlorine levels. Desalinated water is hungry water that can have a drying effect on the hair.

Calcium and chlorine leave the hair feeling dry and weighted down. They can build up on the scalp causing flaking and giving the appearance of dandruff. Calcium can damage the hair cuticle, causing the hair to break off, and can coat the scalp, blocking new growth. Both substances can leave the hair feeling dry and brittle and lacking shine.

Managing hair fall

When taking a supplement such as Permea Plus for hair, gently massage the scalp regularly so the added nutrients present in the blood are fed into the hair follicles. Using natural, warmed oils is also a good way to massage the scalp and lock moisture into the hair shaft.

Hair care routine

If you live in Bahrain, you can't escape using desalinated water.

Use safe and gentle extra moisturising hair care products such as Permea Plus Anti-Sal three-step solution especially designed to prevent hair damage caused by desalinated water and harsh desert climate.

Avoid over-drying and over-use of hot heated appliances.

Use weekly Permea Plus Hair Repair Massage Oil.

When out in the sun, wear a hat.

If hair is weak or brittle, avoid harsh chemical processes.

Try to wash hair only once per week.
