Race fans will have to wait a while for the next instalment of the big screen's favourite children's race car character Lightning McQueen.
In Cars 2 it's not just life but the entire world that's a highway in this somewhat surprising project marking Pixar's third sequel and first outside the Toy Story universe.
The producer of the Oscar-winning film Ratatouille, Brad Lewis, will direct this follow-up to the 2006 blockbuster, which finds hotshot race car Lightning McQueen and rusty, trusty pal Mater going overseas to compete in a major race.
Lightning will take on the globe's fastest and finest in this thrilling high-octane new installment.
The film is scheduled to reach theatres on June 24, 2011. Leading up to then, Pixar has been producing a series of animated shorts starring Mater and friends, for Disney Channel airings and pre-feature theatrical screenings.
Upon the passing of legendary actor Paul Newman, it was revealed that the screen legend hadn't recorded dialogue for the sequel, leaving the presence of Doc Hudson in question.
The film's release was revealed when Pixar and Walt Disney Studios did something completely unexpected when they announced their release schedule through to 2012 at a press conference.
Normally, the Pixar people are very cagey about their projects, preferring to keep the plots - and sometimes even the titles - under wraps until it is necessary to reveal what's up their artistic sleeves. But instead of the normal secrecy, Pixar and Disney revealed much about what they have planned for the next four years including the production of Cars 2 which may also be released on Disney Digital 3-D.
