Dear Stan, ON behalf of the Mission to Seafarers and the Bahrain International Seafarers Society may I thank you for the article which appeared in GulfWeekly.

It presented a very balanced picture of the situation as well as communicating the urgency we feel about the needs of seafarers in Bahrain.

As you may well be aware there have already been encouraging developments regarding the provision of money for a building on the KBSP for a Seafarers Centre, but the very fact that this was not factored in to the original plans for the port indicates that we may need to continue to be vigilant that these needs are met satisfactorily.

Dear Stan,

A group of 30 St Christopher's School students ranging in age from 8 to 15 years returned in jubilant form from their recent trip to Muscat, Oman, where they participated in the very first British School's of the Middle East Swimming Championships.

For many it was their first experience of traveling to compete outside of Bahrain. Added to this was the daunting task of competing in an Olympic sized (50 meter) pool.

Whilst it was somewhat nerve wracking initially, cheering team mates and a tremendous team spirit soon helped to settle pre-race nerves. The standard of swimming was very high across the board and St. Christopher's team gave an outstanding performance resulting in ...gold, ... silver and ... bronze medals as well as creating many new BSME records.

Arriving back in Bahrain to cheering parents and friends, the group agreed that it was a wonderful experience and are already looking forward to competing next year!

With reference to last week's Whisperer column about the price of soft drinks in clubs and bars, at the so called upmarket Dublin Bar I was charged 500 fils for a splash of coke in my beverage.

On complaining and asking for the whole can the bar attendant said I could have the whole can at a cost of BD1.600!
