Mahatma Gandhi University is a well-known centre of higher education in India, inaugurated by the president of India in 1983.
It started an off-campus academic centre in Bahrain at Global Institute in March 2002.
Indian Embassy charge d'affaires Rajeev Shahare opened the centre in the presence of university syndicate member Prof C C Jacob and registrar Dr Jose James.
Now Global enters its fourth year of preparing candidates for undergraduate and post-graduate courses at the university.
Mahatma Gandhi University (MGU) has seven centres in the Gulf and 46 in India.
Students have the convenience of being able to prepare here in Bahrain and the programme also offers the facility to change centres. If students are unable to stay until the end of the course, the university will arrange a transfer to any of its centres.
All courses offered by the MGU centre are regular degree programmes and so a minimum of 75 per cent attendance is compulsory.
Global Institute offers regular morning and evening classes.
It offers courses from two other prestigious state universities - Sikkim Manipal University and Annamalai University. Courses include undergraduate studies such as BCom (with computer), BSc (IT), BBA, BCA, BA (English, Sociology, Politics etc); post graduate courses including MSc (IT), MCom, MA(English, Sociology, Politics etc); as well as professional courses such as BEd, PGDCA, MBA, MCA etc.
The minimum requirement for undergraduate courses is grade 12 pass or equivalent.
For post-graduate programmes, a bachelor's degree recognised by the university is required. For MBA and MCA programmes the candidate should pass the entrance test conducted by the university.
The eligibility for undergraduate course candidates in the Open University stream are 18 years of age, with no basic qualification.
Examinations are conducted in Bahrain under the supervision of the Indian Embassy and the respective university external examiners.
The strengths of the institute include quality teaching, infrastructure, multimedia conference room, teachers' workshops and extracurricular activities.
