A merchant mariner was rescued by the coalition naval team after falling overboard in the Arabian Gulf on Sunday morning and surviving for six hours.
USS Benfold received a distress call at 2am and reported it to Combined Task Force (CTF) 152, which coordinated the rescue efforts from its operations headquarters in Bahrain.
Benfold arrived on station and assumed duties as the on-scene commander, directing a Lynx helicopter embarked aboard HMS Kent, a Royal Navy Type 23 Frigate, to search for the missing mariner.
The helicopter spotted the sailor who had been adrift in the water for six hours and rescued him.
He was then flown aboard Benfold where he was checked by medics, deemed 'fit for duty' and returned to M/V Peter Paul.
