Dog lovers of the island took their pooches for a walk to raise money for the Bahrain Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (BSPCA) this week at their new site in Askar, writes MAI_AL_KHATIB.

The purpose of the annual 'dog walk' was to collect funds for the society's new Animal Welfare Centre. Owners and their canines participated in a 4km walk which was later followed by a number of competitions, a barbecue and refreshments.

Even the dogs at the BSPCA got a chance to strut their stuff.

Frances Alsharif, who volunteers at the BSCPA, told GulfWeekly that the dog walk was a great way to finance the sanctuary. She said: "It is a great idea and a good way to raise money for the animals because we have no finance coming in from anywhere else.

"It was really nice of people to take dogs from the BSCPA for a walk in Askar. It was good for them to get out for a day. As for funding; right now we can use whatever we can get. Every bit helps."

Kevin Blair, a quantity surveyor from Adliya, said: "My family and I participated in the walk last year. This time around my 10-year-old daughter, Dawn, wanted to go because it was her birthday. My family, two dogs and I had an enjoyable time.

"Dawn had so much fun that she went to the BSPCA the next day to walk some of the dogs again."

Karen Sanderson, a lawyer from Saar, attended the event with her sons. She said: "I thought the walk was fantastic and it was a very good idea. My two dogs, Lucy and Benedict that I had rescued from the BSPCA, did not want to go on the walk so we were lagging behind. Patrick, though - the dog I brought from Malaysia - was raring to go."
