German rail operator Deutsche Bahn has signed a multi-billion-dollar contract to build high-speed railway lines and underground transport networks in Qatar and Bahrain.

The contract coincides with the design for the world's longest marine causeway - the Qatar-Bahrain Causeway - being unveiled this week at the Bridges Middle East Conference in Abu Dhabi.

Construction of a 40-km causeway is set to start within the next few months and be open for business by 2015.

The Deutsche Bahn deal clearly indicates the project is now back on track after the rail links became a new integral part of the proposal. The total investment earmarked for the rail projects amounts to $25 billion. An 180-kilometre-long high-speed line to Bahrain is envisaged, with trains capable of travelling 350km per hour.
