INTERNATIONAL racing demons are starting up their engines for the kingdom's first-ever 'Speed Weekend' on Friday and Saturday at the Bahrain International Circuit (BIC) in Sakhir.
The super-charged event brings together three of the leading motor racing series - the Chevrolet Supercars Middle East Championship, the Batelco 2000cc Challenge and the all-new Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge Middle East.
This is part of a package of six big race weekends in the region with further events taking place at Abu Dhabi's Yas Marina Circuit as well as the Reem International Circuit in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
The Chevrolet Supercars will be hosting its second round of the season following the opening race of` the first F1 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix weekend which was won by Bahrain's Shaikh Salman bin Rashid Al Khalifa.
The Batelco 2,000cc Challenge will be staging its third round and the 12-round Porsche GT3 Cup will be making its long-awaited debut.
The 13-strong Porsche GT3 line-up for the first two rounds in Bahrain will include Saudi Arabia's Prince Abdulaziz Al Faisal, his cousin Prince Khalid Al Faisal and Bahrain's Shaikh Salman bin Rashid Al Khalifa, all very experienced campaigners.
Apart from the action on the track the BIC hopes to entice the whole family to the weekend bonanza with a host of activities around the stadium.
There will professional motorbike stuntmen performing a combination of air acrobatics, jumps and tricks. At the 'Kids Corner' there will be miniature train rides, drawing, painting, pottery stations, face painting, henna artists and magic shows. There will also be a traditional Arabic band on hand and a DJ helping to provide an upbeat atmosphere to complement the weekend's main events.
The 'Kart Zone' will also be open on both days of the event.
Tickets will be available on the day itself at the BIC's Welcome Centre and cost BD7 for both days. Entrance will be free of charge for all those aged 15 years and younger. Tickets can be also purchased at the BIC stand in Seef Mall which is open from 10am to 10pm.
