GENERAL Motors (GM) dealers in the Middle East has said that it will continue to honour Hummer warranties while providing service support and spare parts to current and future owners for 10 years from the date of purchase.

The same applies to the 'bumper-to-bumper' warranty for four years or 100,000 km (whichever comes first) for new and existing customers in the Middle East.

The American automotive car giant announced that it will wind down business on its Hummer brand after Chinese suitor Sichuan Tengzhong Heavy Industrial Machinery Co Ltd pulled out of a $150 million deal.

GM has been trying to sell Hummer since last year but clearance by Chinese regulators failed to come through within the proposed timeframe and the deal collapsed.

David Lord, GM sales manager for National Motor Company in Bahrain, said: "Hummers are a popular brand in Bahrain and we sell around half a dozen every month.

"Our stock will last us till the third quarter of this year and we will honour our commitment to our customers with servicing, warranty and availability of parts. But I'm hopeful that a buyer will step in and bail out Hummer as GM is looking elsewhere for buyers."

Hummer is the second brand after Saturn that GM has failed to sell as part of its restructuring plan. GM sold Swedish brand Saab to Dutch carmaker Spyker Cars NV earlier this year. Pontiac is being discontinued.

Hummer traces its origins to the Humvee military vehicle and acquired a devoted following among SUV lovers and celebrities. But the vehicles drew scorn from environmentalists and sales never recovered after petrol prices spiked in the US above $4 for 3.78 litres in the summer of 2008.

Despite negative press reports in the West the Hummer continues to be one of the most popular off-roaders in the Middle East where fuel prices remain low.

The Hummer H3 is now available starting from BD13,500.
