As I drove off from the showroom along the busy Sitra highway in a new Volkswagen Jetta I was struck by the style, grace and luxury of a car so competitively priced – a snip at under BD7,000 – with all the added quality assurance of German workmanship and engineering.

I felt confident and I felt secure. Women on the roads of Bahrain have to feel safe in the knowledge that the car they are driving and carrying their children in is both reliable and powerful enough to get them out of trouble.

When it comes to safety, the VW Jetta boasts six airbags, safety-optimised front headrests, tyre pressure monitoring, electronic stability control and automatic hazard lights on hard braking.

Everything helps because sometimes you need to have eyes in the back of your head on the kingdom’s roads. For instance, I know of a lady who was hit at great speed at a junction by a driver (male!) who ignored a red light.
Fortunately she and her child were not seriously hurt in the accident.

The message to ladies is twofold, make sure you strap your child in with a safety belt (her child was ... but it’s remarkable the number of parents you spot who appear to be oblivious to the danger of allowing their children to roam around the car) and ensure you are driving a vehicle that can survive such an impact.

The Jetta’s controls were very user friendly, simple and efficient. The car held the road extremely well, cornering and accelerating with ease thanks to its responsive two-litre engine and six-speed automatic gearbox.

Although the redesigned model is slightly lighter than its predecessor, everything feels well-controlled and secure even at high speeds.

From a woman’s point of view, this car also boasts plenty of room for the family, together with a fully adjustable driver’s seat and steering wheel to ensure a comfortable drive.

The new design has allowed for a generous amount of space not only for extra head and knee room for all occupants, but also ample room for luggage (shopping bags!).

Friends tell me the new VW Jetta is a particular favourite for mums with small children as it has plenty of room for child-seats and is ideal for those regular school runs. It’s also compact enough to make it easy to park and the added bonus is that it looks good too!
