ACE skater Mohamed Salman will be holding workshops for young extreme sports enthusiasts at the Bahrain International Circuit in Sakhir as part of Wheelathon 2011 on Friday, writes Shilpa Chandran.
Children aged eight and above will be invited to participate in the family entertainment arena and they will be treated to a series of amazing in-line skating demonstrations.
Mohamed, 23, from Galali, said: "I’m really excited as this is the first time that I have presented skating workshops. I had to learn the basic tricks through tapes and DVDs and wish someone had been around to offer me some useful tips at the start."
Mohamed, who has been skating for eight years, will discuss the history of the sport as well as explain the different techniques, uses and purposes of the skates, such as, how to adjust them to make the feet feel comfortable, how to roll on them, how to stop quickly as well as basic air and grind tricks.
Wheelathon organiser David Axtell said: "We are absolutely delighted that Mohamed has agreed to join us this year. The synergy between what he does and the Wheelathon adds an exciting component to the popular annual charity event."
Mohamed, an aircraft engineering student at the Bahrain Airport Services Aircraft Engineering Institute, has competed in several competitions in the region as well as Korea. He is set to attend the Mettle Games in Singapore later this year.
The Wheelathon will start with the crazy hospital bed race at 1pm where teams of six will compete along the main straight of the F1 circuit. The beds are being provided by Ibn Al Nafees Hospital.
The wheelie fun main family event starts at 2.30pm when participants are flagged off from pole position. Any non-motorised form of wheeled transport is allowed, from bicycles and skateboards through to roller blades and scooters.
In addition to the 5.4km F1 circuit, there will be a shorter 2.2km track for the younger or less adventurous that still takes in the main grandstand, pit lane and VIP tower.
A team of nurses from the International Hospital of Bahrain will be positioned at various points around the circuit and Coca Cola will be providing refreshments.
Afterwards the family entertainment area will host a DJ and bouncy castle as well as the skating workshop. Money raised at the event will be shared between breast cancer awareness charity Think Pink Bahrain and the RIA learning centre.
