Under-strength and under par, the British Club 1664 easily defeated the expensively assembled dream team, Arabian Celts A, 5-2 in the Bahrain Expat League at the British School of Bahrain in Hamala.
With star player Tom Herrity waiting in the wings, a tricky-looking fixture against Celts A turned out to be surprisingly comfortable for the Brit Club.
Vice-captain and striker Sanjeev ‘wazza’ Pathak got the club off to a prefect start when he turned and neatly slotted a Dan ‘the diver’ Edwards through ball.
The Celts came back with what proved to be merely a consolation effort. British Club skipper Dave ‘Scotty Parker’ Good then drilled home a low, rasping drive from outside the box to give his side the lead and one they would ultimately never surrender.
Second half strikes from Eric ‘Le Magician’ Sandretto, man of the match Edwards and returning midfield governor Matt ‘bite yer ankles’ Taylor, gave the scoreline a more realistic and accurate reflection.
It could have been even more for the Brit Club but Raj ‘Poacher’ Pahuja, the team’s version of King Kenny, had a fine shot saved by the Arabian Celts keeper late in the second half.
Some excellent officiating by the man in black, Nick Davis, saw a Celts player sent off for mindless and childish retaliation, to a perfectly good challenge.
