American actor and comedian Andy Samberg announced last week that he will not return as the usual cast member on the TV show Saturday Night Live (SNL) after appearing for seven seasons.
Samberg is known as the face of SNL and joined the comedic sketch show in 2005. He provided the show with its most memorable music offerings including the parody Lazy Sunday and I’m on a Boat and won an Emmy Award in 2007 for best original music and lyrics.
“It’s an incredibly emotional and strange moment in my life,” Samberg told The New York Times. “Obviously it’s not a huge shock, but I did officially decide not to come back.”
Samberg also added that choosing to leave SNL was one of the hardest decisions he has had to make, but he received advice from outgoing cast member Kristin Wiig.
“She kept saying it just feels like it’s her time,” Samberg said. “I connect with that. Something about it just feels like it’s the moment. My contract’s up and I did so much more than I ever thought I would even do.”
Like other SNL alumni, Samberg will be seen on the big-screen with his new movie co-starring Adam Sandler, That’s My Boy which is out this month.
