Gulf Weekly Write to the editor

THIS Friday is the United Nations International Day of Peace – Peace One Day.

Schools, firms and government departments will all be celebrating with events throughout the day, alongside those preceding it and falling after.

At Rainbows for Kids Nursery in Muharraq, we shall be planting Pinwheels  For Peace, flying our Peace Doves and making and flying Peace Flags, as well as holding a Peace Intentions Circle for adults – teachers and parents.

We are also asking other schools, clubs and businesses to join us in our version of One Day, One Goal.

Around the world, many people from different communities will join together to play on the same team in a football match.

We have also organised a match here in Bahrain for the past six years. Due to the troubles last year many people were unable to make it to the game in time, so I thought that to reach a wider section of people this year we would alter the idea dramatically.

We are asking schools, clubs, malls and businesses to commit to having an event whereby everyone gets to kick a football to another person whom they may or may not know, wishing them peace at the same time. It’s a small thing that makes people stop and think for a moment after they have kicked it.

We shall also be taking part in the cancer awareness event to be held at Shaikh Khalifa Park in Hidd on December 22 at 4pm.

After the Walkathon, we shall be opening a booth where children can kick a football to score a goal for Peace One Day and for Scoring in The Fight Against Cancer.

Rainbows For Kids will donate at least 100fils for each goal scored by the children (an amount little children can understand).

Anyone wanting to know more or how to get involved can phone me on 39899030.

Many thanks,
Christine Hasan.

AFTER the amazing visitor response in the last two months which saw more than 3,500 visitors enjoy the science, art and craft workshops, Bahrain Science Centre, pictured above, right, is hosting a series of debates.

Visitors are now invited to participate in debates on topics which include marine conservation, nuclear energy, genetically-modified food and organic food. With the ‘marine’ theme of the month, children and youths can also come and enjoy a talk which will take them through a spectacular journey to meet some of the weird and wonderful creatures that live in the sea.

Best regards,

Thanks for the new Infiniti JX test drive report by Susan Tealby (GulfWeekly Issue 36). I am sure your article helped to generate the right kind of ‘buzz’ in Bahrain – we have had fantastic feedback.

A quick note of thanks to supporters and friends of the BSPCA; we have moved into the Animal Welfare Centre (AWC) in Askar.

Whatever your hand in this monumental achievement, great or small, whether it was services, materials, funds or simply spreading the word, I thank you from the bottom of my heart for helping to make the much needed AWC, so badly needed in Bahrain, become a reality.

Now the real work of improving animal welfare in Bahrain can really start.  Please continue to support the BSPCA.

Ibn Al Nafees Hospital will be commemorating World Heart Day this year with various activities until September 30 with the motto ‘Prevention is better than treatment’.

We celebrate this health event annually to spread awareness of the risks associated with cardiac disease and the measures that we can all take to prevent it.

Raising awareness is considered by our hospital to be of prime importance and part of our duty to the community.

In collaboration with our awareness programme, we will offer specially-discounted cardiac tests packages, which initially consist of two blood tests. Should these bloods tests show any irregularities, patients will be advised to take advantage of more in-depth cardiac investigations. These will also be discounted and will be carried out by Dr S.A. Hussain, Specialist Physician and Cardiologist, and will consist of an ECG, Echo and TMT.

To encourage exercise in a fun way, the hospital staff have organised a Walkround Al A’Ali Mall on Friday from 11am. There will also be a drawing competition for children with the theme ‘Heart Health’. Hospital staff will also be on hand to conduct basic medical checks and provide information and advice to visitors.

During the two-week campaign the hospital will also conduct a series of lectures as part of its ongoing education programme.

For more information call 17828282, 1782863 or 17828278.

Cathie Yousif, hospital operations manager.
