Twin Palms Riding Centre will hold the first of this season’s events on Friday with a FuN Gymkhana for juniors and adults.

In line with the end of season gymkhana, it promises to be an action-packed event, especially with veteran riding instructor-proprietor-owner, Anki Holmstrom, designing and organising all the games and events.

The entrants will be put into teams and then put through their paces. The previous gymkhana featured all sorts of races, starting with an alternative egg and spoon; at that time potatoes were used.

Whilst the race started sedately enough at a walk, as soon as one circuit had been completed, it was into trot, for the diehards remaining, canter was next and potatoes were seen flying all over the paddock.

The games moved on to a form of polo-crosse race, where entrants had to pick up polo-crosse (a mixture of lacrosse and polo on horseback) balls, manoeuvre them down the paddock and into the goals.

There were many other races during that afternoon culminating in a really challenging obstacle course adventure with jumps, barrels and walking of the plank, amongst other tasks to be completed.

It may sound simple – but, believe me, it most certainly was not. Nevertheless, it was a great deal of fun.

The gymkhana will start at 9am and be held in Twin Palms Riding Centre’s covered/shaded arena. Spectators are welcome to come along and cheer the participants.

To add a bit of colour to the occasion, all riders will be donning their best neon-coloured clothing to brighten up the morning.

Do not expect anything dull about the occasion.

Twin Palms Riding Centre will also be hosting the first of its Pony Camps on October 29. It will cover all aspects of basic pony care from correctly catching the pony, grooming, use of brushes, correct tacking up, an hour’s riding, then correct removal, and putting away.

Theory classes will cover tack cleaning, general knowledge, safety and confidence in and around the yard. A healthy lunch will be provided and the camp will run from 9am to 1pm, for children aged five to 11.
