Gulf Weekly Stage set for start of horse racing season

This season’s horse racing events will start on November 2. Trainers have been out trying to get their horses prepared for the inaugural race of the season, the Late Shaikh Rashid’s Opening Day Cup, for local bred maiden horses that are three-years-old and upwards.

Maiden horses are animals that have not won a race and are referred to by this name regardless of being male or female. Maiden horse races are held over different distances and under conditions with eligibility based on the sex or age of the horse, races may be handicapped.

It is an extremely competitive race and usually there are at least 18 runners, certainly an event not to be missed.

This race at the start of the season is the lead-up to the big races that will be held in 2013, namely, the Silver Cup, the Crown Prince Cup, which will be held in February, ending the season with the Gold Cup, and Kings Cup. These are hugely prestigious races.

I will bring you all the thrills and spills from this weekend’s events in the next issue. However, now that we are officially clear of Glanders it will be wonderful to see all equestrian events going again.
