Mubarak Saad Sultan led the field of 70 players in the 22nd outing of Awali Golf Club’s Bill Brien Trophy.
With a Stableford format of 7/8ths handicap allowance that slightly favours the low handicappers, he gained his top prize with only 36 points, with runner-up Nasser Al Kaabi losing on countback.
In third and fourth places were Nathan Sundaresan and Dave Bridger, also on 36 points. Completing the prizes list were Ali Danesh (35) and Ziggy Trzebinski (34). Sue Scott was the winner of the prize reserved for ladies.
With the Club Captain absent due to illness, Dave Bailey stood in as master-of-ceremonies, and personally reminisced about Bill Brien with fondness.
Amongst other things, Dave pondered on Bill being one of life’s great characters, a person in the employ of the Kanoo family and cherished by them for something like 49 years, and of Bill being a ‘ladies man’, the reason that this is the only club competition with a main prize specifically for the ladies.
Sponsored by Bapco, prizes had a theme of old timepieces, totalling befitting the average age of those in the club, being dominated by old-timers, some of which can still play decent golf!
