Jubilant Andrew Marshall repeated his winning performance for the third year to take the recent 5th King Hamad Trophy Golf Championship at the Royal Golf Club.

Marshall completed a hat-trick of titles in Bahrain by claiming victory on the Montgomerie Course in Riffa.

The 39-year-old Englishman, who also regularly plays in the Bahrain Open over the sand course at Awali Golf Club, won his third successive title with a score of 207, nine under par, in the 54 hole event with last year’s runner-up Younes El Hassani again settling for second place with 212.

Third was England’s Yasin Ali (215) ahead of Bahrain’s top golfer Hamad Al Afnan.

More than 100 golfers, from 20 countries competed in the annual event, held under the patronage of His Majesty King Hamad and organised to mark Bahrain’s National Day celebrations and the 13th anniversary of His Majesty King Hamad’s accession to the throne.

Batelco group chief executive officer Shaikh Mohamed bin Isa Al Khalifa attended the prize presentation as main sponsor of the event, organised by the Bahrain Golf Association (BGA), which also attracted golden sponsorship from Kuwait Finance House – Bahrain (KFH-Bahrain).

Players from Bahrain, neighbouring Gulf States and Europe took part in the annual event, which organisers described as a huge success. Brigadier-General Ali Sager Al Noaimi, vice-president of BGA, said: “Bahrain was the first country in the GCC to embrace the sport. The championship attracts many players from Bahrain and other Middle Eastern and Asian countries.”

The telecom giant’s chief executive praised the association for its efforts in running the tournament. “The event serves to promote Bahrain as a sporting and tourism destination with facilities that compare favourably to those in leading international destinations.

“The Colin Montgomerie-designed course at Riffa is among the leading courses in the region and reflects the high standards that the kingdom strives to uphold.”

Sattam Algosaibi, executive manager and head of corporate finance at KFH-Bahrain, added: “We were pleased to support the 5th King Hamad Trophy Golf Championship and contribute towards raising the profile of the kingdom as a major destination for world top class sports championships.”
