Gulf Weekly Chip shot tips

Successful, consistent contact with your chip shots breeds a confidence that can permeate throughout your game. Knowing that you can accurately land the ball where you want to and predict the spin/roll of the ball will help you visualise great shots, and execute them, writes Matt Chalmers.

Setting up to the ball correctly is key to successful application. The ball should be central in your stance, you should be gripping down the club and your hands should be pressed slightly ahead of the ball. Finally, and most importantly, a significant amount of your weight should be placed on your front foot, which helps to promote the required descending angle of attack.

In terms of swing thoughts, you should imagine that your shoulders rock from side to side and you maintain the ‘Y’ shape between your arms and shaft of the club. Additionally, imagine that you have a BD20 note underneath your front foot, it is very windy and your job is to keep all of your weight pressed firmly down throughout the swing to make sure your cash doesn’t blow away!

This will help you combat the instinct to lean backwards as you hit the ball.

Combining a good set up with positive swing thoughts can only result in successful application (if you practice). Keep these thoughts in mind the next time you get out on the course and watch your chipping improve.
