Be prepared to be mesmerised. I watched in awe as these young stars blew me away with their harmonious melodies, dramatic acting and graceful dance routines.

Two giant stands are located on either side of the hall and the intense action takes place in the centre, mostly on a black and white chequered New York street. A fire escape replica and orchestra are situated close by.

Colourful red and blue outfits distinguish the Jets (blue) from the Sharks (red). The gang rivalry even spills onto the stands as one seating area is set aside for the Shark fans and another allocated for the Jets.

When I closed my eyes I could see the actual musical playing in my head and would never have guessed that it was being performed by a group of children.

Maria (Scarlet Robinson) was magnificent. This young performer belted out beautiful songs alongside a strong leading man Tony (Gersham Vacarizas) who moved me with his vocal abilities.

The opening act, when the gangs first rumble, captivated me instantaneously. The actors were playful in their taunting just like in the movie…  and the adults playing Lt Schrank (Jacob Rusling) and Officer Krupke (Martyn Wharrie) were convincing with their clever accents and commanding demeanours.

The dance scene where Tony first lays eyes on Maria had me stomping my feet and swaying to the Latin jazz beats. The actors were having fun themselves.

I had goose bumps when Tony sang Something’s Coming and my eyes welled up at Maria’s famous closing monologue when her heart turns to stone after (spoilers alert) tragedy strikes.

Altogether it was a captivating, fun and emotional musical experience… and that was just the dress rehearsal. It can only get better, if that’s possible!
