World famous DJ Calvin Harris and Grammy-winning R’n’B star Ne-Yo will perform at the 2013 Formula 1 Gulf Air Bahrain Grand Prix on April 21.

Scottish-born singer, songwriter and producer Harris will perform as part of the post-race concert at the Bahrain International Circuit, starting at 6pm on April 21 with Ne-Yo, singer, songwriter, actor and producer, taking to the stage afterwards. Entry to the concert is free for three-day ticket holders and Sunday (race day) ticket holders.

Performing at the F1 Village’s Main Stage will be two prominent dance troupes – the Calpulli Mexican Dance Group and India’s Bhangra Empire dance team. Other main stage performers include acts from France, Kenya, Switzerland, Japan and China.

Other performers will roam around the Village to keep visitors entertained off the track. These include Scotsman Bagpipe Roy, Mexico’s Mariachi Jalisco, the Chinese Lion Dance troupe, France’s Circo Rum Ba Ba theatre show and Egypt’s Menoufia of Folk Art troupe.


Angelo and the Crazy Feet, a group of a dozen dancers performing tap dance, and Talija, will also perform.

Mugenko Taiko Drummers are set to keep the beat alive by using ancient Japanese forms of percussion and martial arts-style movement.

Pauliteiros de Palacoulo will enthral audiences with fighting dance style straight from Portugal.

Classical carnival style stilt walkers will also be present.

The BIC has also launched a new initiative called Rush Hour twice a day at its sales outlets in Seef Mall and BCC. From 1pm-2pm and 7pm-8pm daily there will be a free gift given to everyone buying tickets.

 

The 2013 Spring of Culture is upon us with a riveting season of entertainment to enthral young and old alike.

Now in its eighth year with, the schedule, under the banner ‘Revealing Bahrain’ is packed with acts.

Booked to perform are renowned vocalists, musicians, performance-art companies, visual art exhibitions, lectures and family fun activities, as well as educational workshops catering to audiences of all ages.

Jordanian musician Farah Siraj has been named Jordan’s Musical Ambassadress and the Norah Jones of the Middle East. Her original compositions blend Middle Eastern influences with flamenco, jazz, bossa and pop. She has performed at prestigious platforms including the United Nations, Nobel Prize Hall and the World Economic Forum. She will perform on Friday at 8pm at the Cultural Hall.

An exhibition by architects Finnish Thomas Modeen and Bahraini Maysam Alnasser as well as French-Tunisian calligrapher Akar will take place from April 20-May 20 at La Fontaine Centre of Contemporary Art.

The Umang 2013 children’s talent competition, consisting of art, cultural and literary events, will begin on April 18 at the Indian Club in Gudaibiya.

The applicants will be divided into three age groups – seven to 10, 11-13 and 14-16.

Art categories include competitions for western dance, folk dance, cinematic, fancy dress, instrumental music, clay modelling, music, vocal Hindi film songs, drawing and painting.

Literary categories include essay writing in English, handwriting, poetry recitation (Hindi and English), speech, storytelling and poetry writing and general knowledge.

Children will also compete for the titles of Kala Shri (overall boy champion), Kala Ratna (overall girl champion) and Group Championship.

The Miss International Princess Beauty Pageant will take place at the Gulf Hotel’s Gulf Convention Centre on April 18 at 8pm-midnight.

The winner will appear in a Bollywood movie and a music video.

Entertainment will be provided with a Bollywood dance troupe, a dhol player as well as Indian singer Anuksha Manchanda, Pakistani Punjabi singer Kiran Khan. A Bahraini singer, who is yet to be announced, will also perform.

Alwan 338, a community-driven cultural and artistic collaboration, will take place until April 26 at Adliya’s Block 338. This year’s theme is Common Ground. Alwan 338 encourages public participation and engagement with the unique architecture of Adliya through public art projects, installations, educational workshops, open-air music concerts and film screenings.


A tentative list of participating Bahraini artists include: Haya Al Khalifa, Wasan Madan, Noor Al-Bastaki, Jenine Sharabi, Waheedah Mallulah, Mohamed Sharkawy, Maysam Al Nasser, Tamader Ali Isa, Hassan Hujairi, and Jaffar Aloraibi.


In addition, 10 international artists will collaborate with local artists and communities to create site-specific pieces, as well as give workshops and public talks about their artistic practices.


Ismail Bahri, from Tunisia, will present his video work at Al Riwaq Art Space.


Sylvie Meunier, from France, will be working with an archive of photos to recreate news narratives and fiction in Adliya.


Noor Ali Chagani, from Pakistan, winner of this year’s Jameel Art Prize, will carry out several installations transforming the urban landscape.


Tendance Floue Collective, from France, will work alongside five local photographers to construct a photographic sculpture.


Alessandra Domingues, from Brazil, will create several in and outdoor light installations.


Osama Esid, from Syria, uses accordion cameras and ancient printing techniques to create art.


Ndary Ly, from Senegal, will intervene in the public space with his large-scale installation composed of everyday, common, discarded objects.

Fierce Angel is enjoying it’s fiercest year ever! Set up in 2006 by Mark Doyle, the creator of Hed Kandi, Fierce Angel has been picking up critical acclaim worldwide. Having released 25 compilations, performed all over the UK and at some of the wildest locations around the world, clubbers in Bahrain can enjoy a 12-hour extravaganza at one of the trendiest night spots in the region – the sky lounge on the rooftop of Hotel Diva, Juffair.

Headlining the event is DJ Mike Van Loon, above, who is well established on the Dutch house music scene. The Hed Kandi resident plays all over the world. His musical style spans funky uplifting US garage to West Coast deep house through to electro and progressive underground sounds.

Also appearing is percussionist Assaf (London) who is regarded for his unique blend of showmanship and a repertoire of innovative grooves. His most recognisable talent is juggling three drumsticks while holding down a steady beat on the drums, known as The Fat Groove. Alongside Mike and Assaf will be saxophonist Emma F, left, showcasing her musical talent. Resident DJ Derek John will also perform.
