VENUS, who last week celebrated lifting the cup, were this week celebrating winning the GulfWeekly-sponsored Arsenal Soccer School Bahrain Ladies League.
They grabbed the title with one game left to play of the fifth season of the highly-competitive competition after overcoming Junior Gunners in a tight game.
Bolstered by the return of national team player Phoebe License who scored two fine goals, the Gunners put up a great effort and made the unbeaten Venus team work hard for their victory. A goal from Esra Nuruddin, and a brace apiece for Fatima Mahmoud and Sarah Jackson ensured all three points went Venus’ way.
Venus player/manager Nuruddin said: “The girls are delighted to win both the league and the cup this season.
“This is our third season participating in the league, and the first time that we have won anything, so to win both competitions is amazing. The squad has an excellent spirit.”
In the other games, Arsenal Yellows needed to win to force the title decider into the last game, but suffered a disastrous start against Joga, going two goals down with efforts from Sara Jalal and Hanan Al Ghazra before regaining their composure and fighting back with replies from Nada Alsaeed and Millie Gallagher.
But a determined Joga scored again through Jalal for a 3-2 victory and end the title aspirations of the Yellows.
In the third game, an understrength Desert Divas were punished heavily by Arsenal Reds who ran out 9-0 winners with goals from six-goal hotshot Reema Al Qassab and Ameera Burquois and Dalal Al Ansari with the desperate Divas letting in an own goal too.
The presentation of the awards will take place at Soccer City on Monday, following an evening of social football for all the players. All ladies interested in playing can come along and participate in the game, which begins at 6.45pm.
