The harvest festival of the south Indian state of Kerala and the visit of its folkloric King Mahabali is being marked by an on-going four-day celebration at the Indian Club. It features a traditional flower display contest ‘pookkala malsaram’ with prize money of $1,000 (BD377) on offer, a tug-of-war challenge and today will see the traditional dance contest Thiruvathirakali with another $1,000 on offer, as well as Onam games for the whole family. Tomorrow there will be a ‘ultsava parambu’ – a traditional Kerala village market with stalls of food, games and accessories. Well-known south Indian folk singer Pranavam Sasi and his team are being flown in for the occasion. The celebrations culminate on Friday in the Onasadhya (Onam feast) featuring a lunch served on a plantain leaf in traditional style with Kerala delicacies prepared and cooked at live stations by chefs flown-in from India. The First Aid Box will be staging a first aid course for families, students, housemaids and nannies from 9am to noon in Layla Garden in Saar. The Royal Country Club has a wide range of fitness classes and activities for children this month including the new Little Rhymes section every Tuesday starting October 1 for those aged 18 months to three-and-a-half years. Classes will include storytelling, using instruments, singing, dancing, musical games, writing and colouring activities.

Handy Crafty classes for seven-10s are held every Wednesday starting October 2 consisting of handicraft lessons and activities combined with songs and rhymes. Bricks 4 Kidz takes place every Thursday afternoon starting October 3 with a class for three-to-fives and another for six-to-nines. This programme uses LEGO bricks to build models with exciting themes such as space, construction, animals and famous buildings. Each of the above programmes costs BD50 per child for 10 x 1-hour sessions.
