Gulf Weekly If the shoe fits!

Gulf Weekly Camille Jones
By Camille Jones

As we sat around the GulfWeekly office the other day we had a very sole-ful, tongue-in-cheek conversation about footwear. I asked the men about their buying decisions and what they would consider wearing when they wanted to put their best foot forward.

What I found interesting was that each man had very different reasons for their shoe purchases. One had a pair on that looked brand new but they had in fact been bought five years ago. I figured, OK, he purchases timeless shoe styles that are durable in order to be efficient. I couldn’t believe how white the pair still looked. I was shocked.

The second man took it quite seriously and had his shoes made at a cobbler that gave him a tailored pair boasting quality and style. The third man had no idea where he bought his shoes from, all he knows is when he needs a pair he checks for style and colour, he doesn’t care much about where he purchases them.

This conversation then led me on this week’s mission to find men’s shoes for less and it started at Shoemart in Bahrain City Centre.

I first noticed a group of four young men trying on the Lee Cooper brand. Lee Cooper, well known for its denims, is also proclaims a very trendy and reasonably-priced footwear line.  It seemed to be a very popular section.

I later popped into Shoe Express and asked the assistant manager, Bageesh Parambat where he finds most men looking.  He directed me to a popular section that sold moccasins for men.  Being from Canada I am a huge fan of the moccasin and have a handmade pair from an Aboriginal woman who lives on a reserve outside of Winnipeg.

The word ‘moccasin’ comes from the Cree, or Algonquian, word maskisina, meaning shoes or footwear.  I had no idea they were so popular with men too! He showed me various colours, fabrics and styles with prices starting at only BD11.  They even have some genuine leather right now starting at BD 15.9.

There is no doubt that once the heat breaks it will be much easier for people to move around and start to get some exercise outdoors. Reebox has a sale on right now on its classic, outdoor and walk product lines. You will find the sale towards the back of the store with pairs priced for BD22.700, a saving from the regular price of BD32.500.

Payless has men’s Airwalk shoes on for BD 11 in various styles and colours. Just look for the green ‘incredible value’ signs and save every time.

I also gave Natasha Daniel, our fashion expert, a call in order to get her opinion on where to shop for men’s shoes for our Gulfweekly readers. She mentioned that Saks Fifth Avenue had some funky casual shoes in variety of colours and that Zara and Hugo Boss never disappoint in quality and style.

Other deals I’m privy to: Spend BD50 at Kenneth Cole receive BD5 voucher – all locations – sales ending October 5.

Birkenstock 25-50 per cent off –all locations -sales ending October 5.
