YASIN Ali won the sixth King Hamad Trophy at the Royal Golf Club on Saturday after playing a two-under-par 72 in the third and final round to finish with a winning score of 11-under 205 as the Brits put on a master display on the challenging Montgomerie course claiming the top five places.

The British professional won just two strokes ahead of defending champion Andrew Marshall who carded the best score of the day, playing an eight-under 66 to finish with an overall total of 207 over three rounds.

Taking third through fifth place, respectively, were Mathew Daly, Daniel Owen and Chris McDonnell. They each had overall scores of seven-under-par 209.

In sixth was Kenyan Greg Snow with a six-under-par 210 total, while Clarke Lutton claimed seventh another four shots adrift. Rounding out the top eight was Morocco’s Younes El Hassan, who was the runner-up last year.

Bahrain’s best finisher was national team veteran Hamad Mubarak, who was classified 14th overall with a six-over-par 222 and was also among the best amateurs in the championship.

Abdulla Sultan was ranked second amongst the locals and 18th overall with a 224 total, while Mohammed Diab followed in 22nd position on 226 strokes. Jakub Hrinda of Slovakia was the highest-ranked competitor of this category. The 13-year-old Doha-based schoolboy finished the competition with a four-over-par 220. Ahmed Marjane of Morocco was the runner-up one shot behind, while Bahrain’s Mubarak was third-best amongst the amateurs.

A total of 48 of the 92 players who started the tournament took to the 18-hole Montgomerie championship course for the final round. After play, the winners were presented their respective prizes by Bahrain Golf Association officials.

This year’s tournament was organised by the BGA and sponsored by Batelco, Bahrain’s Economic Development Board, Bahrain Petroleum Company, Ithmaar Bank, Aluminium Bahrain, Nass Contracting Company, Gulf Petrochemical Industries Company, Bahrain Gas and Kuwait Finance House.

Batelco Chairman Shaikh Hamad bin Abdulla Al Khalifa was in attendance for the prize presentation and praised the organisers for their efforts in running the tournament, which does much to promote golf in the kingdom, and said the telecom company was delighted to help contribute to the success of the event.

“The event serves to promote Bahrain as a sporting and tourism destination with facilities that compare favourably to those in leading international destinations. The Colin Montgomery-designed course at Riffa is among the leading courses in the region and reflects the high standards that the kingdom strives to uphold,” he added.
