THE WHC Brien Trophy contest was staged on Friday at Awali Golf Club.
With the course suffering flooding recently, the ground staff and Course Member Ali Musbah pulled out all the stops to get the course back into a playable condition.
Schoolboy Ahmed Mohammed stormed away from the rest of the field, winning on a huge 45 points, two points clear of another great performance by Ateeq Mujali.
Mohammed, 15, got his hands on the trophy, his prize and a well-deserved 6 shots handicap cut. He appears to be on a roll and is expected to achieve a single figure handicap in the not-too-distant future.
Historically, Bill Brien was a stalwart of the club for 34 years, first sponsoring his competition in 1991 and choosing a format of 7/8ths handicap allowance to add a little more difficulty.
Bill is also remembered for his witty speeches and a twinkle in his eye, this exemplified by the make-up of the prize table, with the WHC Brien Trophy being the only competition with a main prize awarded for the best lady.
Keeping Bill’s memory alive, prizes were sponsored by the club and presented by Vice-Captain Jan McAlpine.
