The most important aspect of putting is actually getting the speed of the putt correct. If your pace is inconsistent and your putts either go too far past or fall too short of the hole, you will always find reading the break of the putt difficult.
The idea is to have the ball rolling at a consistent speed towards the hole so that the ball always finishes past the hole, but no more than a putter length past. This is easier said than done so to improve your pace, you do need to practice.
I advise that before teeing off in any round of golf, you spend more time on the practice putting green than you do hitting balls on the driving range. This is so you can feel how the putts are rolling on the day of play. You use your putter more times than any other club when playing a round so make sure you practice the most with the putter.
