TALENTED Bahraini students are hoping to set the silver-screen ablaze with a short movie, filmed as part of the second edition of the General Organisation for Youth and Sports (GOYS) programme ‘Red Carpet’.

The programme aims to encourage young people to produce short, meaningful films to be screened in Bahrain cinemas.

There are currently five teams from across Bahrain competing for glory in the competition, which sees how much they can do with a BD100 budget.

The team from Bahrain Polytechnic, which features members of the Dead Sands team, who made and featured in a recently-released Bahrain-made zombie movie, are putting the finishing touches to their latest offering entitled Carousel.

Script writer Yasmeen Abul, director Khalid Abdulmajeed, assistant director Mohammed AlAbbasi, marketing manager Ali Al Muharraqi, sound manager Ebrahim Rashed, director of photography Abdulrahman Abdulla, editor Basma Mahmood, art director Amal Alameer and team coach Ameera Al Qaed are all enthusiastic about the project.

Producer Mohammed Zayani, 20, from Riffa, said: “It’s a movie about hope, not giving up, being passionate.

“In Bahrain we have lots of local talent but they seem to lose hope and stop what they’re doing. Our message is for creative people such as actors, directors, musicians, etc., to come together and showcase their talents because who knows where you’ll end up if you follow your passion.”

The film, which is around 12-minutes long, follows a doctor who develops a medical device that allows him to travel into the minds of coma patients to wake them up. He travels into the mind of a girl and tries to convince her she is in a coma but she doesn’t want to listen as she loves the dream she’s in.

Mohammed says that it’s hard to fit such an intricate plot into such a short movie, but the team behind him has been ‘fantastic’.

He said: “Yes, it is a challenging project, but it’s also a lot of fun thanks to the people in our group. Director Ameera Al Qaed is fantastic, she did such a great job directing Dead Sands and although she works hard, she’s really fun too.”

The films are set to premiere this month and a winner will be chosen.

Bahraini youngsters consider the programme as an opportunity to showcase their creativity and develop their talents and abilities in the field of filmmaking.
