Competitors are putting the finishing touches to their training in anticipation of the first Challenge Bahrain, a half-triathlon boasting a record amount of prize money.
Around $500,000 is up for grabs as local athletes compete against the world’s top triathletes. Organisers expect 1,025 participants coming from 52 countries
“We have seen a big number from Bahrain too with more than 250 Bahrainis and expats taking part in the event, said spokesman Sameera Al Bitar. “This is the first time an event like this is being held in Bahrain or the Middle East as it is the first branded international triathlon to take place in the Middle East.
“Since the race has the largest prize money in the world for the half distance, the event has attracted top triathletes from all over with over 70 professionals competing for the prize money.”
Saturday is the main race day, however, the whole weekend is full of events with a women’s charity run and a junior race, as well as an expo with sport products being sold.
Prize money will be divided between the top 10 male and female athletes, as well as a category for Bahrainis and a category for GCC nationals.
Challenge Bahrain, which involves 21.1km of running, 90km of cycling and 1.9km of swimming, kicks off at 7.30am in Bahrain Bay and full details are available by visiting www.challenge-bahrain.com.bh/event-guide/event-timetable
