The right approach

IT would be great to hit every shot on to the green and have a tap-in putt, but many times we are left with a medium-to-long distance putt.

Many amateurs will take three putts, not because of poor direction but poor distance control – either hitting the first putt too hard or too soft. Being able to take two shots from distance is a big key to consistent scores.

Try this practice drill to improve your speed control on longer approach putts.

* Line up five balls on the practice putting green.
* For your first putt, aim to roll the ball approximately 30 feet across the green.
* After your first stroke, quickly move on to the second ball and try to repeat the same length and speed of swing without looking up at the result.
* Repeat this for five balls and then look to see if the balls are nicely grouped at the same distance.
* Practice the drill five or six times and I guarantee your ‘feel’ for your pace of stroke and the green will improve.
