THE GulfWeekly Bahrain Ladies League saw a crunch first versus second encounter. Arsenal U21s took the lead against Venus last Wednesday night with a 17th-minute goal from Kia Hanahoe but their advantage was shortlived when Tala Bashmi replied a minute later.
Venus used the momentum to notch a second with a magnificent Fatema Mahmood lob just 60 seconds later but after that quick flurry of net-busting action the score remained 2-1 up until half-time.
It wasn’t until 10 minutes into the second period that Sarah Samiey put Venus further ahead.
However, in this thrilling end-to-end encounter, Hala Zayani replied with a brilliant first time strike putting the U21s back in contention for a share of the spoils.
Arsenal U21s pushed hard and in the last 15 minutes remained camped in the Venus half. Determined defending from Layla Yafi and stand-in goalkeeper Kanwal Hameed, however, secured all three points for Venus which means that they leapfrogged Arsenal U21s and now sit proudly on top of the table.
RCSI faced Seef Dental in the night’s other fixture with both teams searching for a first win. Seef started off with a flyer getting a goal in the first minute from Soraya Faiz and seemed to be in control of the game with Mary Mills securing another strike just before the break.
After half-time it was a different story. It’s unsure what team boss Alana McConalouge said to her players but RCSI came out fighting. Ten minutes into the second half RCSI were rewarded for their efforts with a goal from Melanie Garret.
RCSI continued to bombard the Seef goal, but time ran out as Seef shut up shop and managed to hold on and take all three points.
Tonight’s fixtures sees Joga and RCSI battling it out and both hoping to record a first victory and last season’s champions Arsenal Ladies aiming to get back to winning ways playing against an improved and buoyant Seef.
