Gulf Weekly Cool Steve clinches cup

Keeping his cool better than others, Steve Diaper emerged overall winner with a net 69 (gross 91) in the 47th Abdulla Ali Kanoo Cup competition at Awali Golf Club on Friday.

Of all Awali’s weekend competitions that have external sponsors, the Kanoo Cup is the one with the greatest longevity. The event was as popular as ever with more than 90 players competing.

Ahmed Abdulla Ali Kanoo, representing the Kanoo Group, presented the prizes, assisted by tournament director Richard Loker.

Reflecting the windy playing conditions, the scores were not overly stunning and for those with an unhealthy in-depth knowledge of golf, the CSS was an abnormally high 72.

Diaper was followed by Nathan Prince the overall runner-up (69/83), Bill Scarth overall third (70/86) and overall 4th Sun Kyu Kwak (70/10), whilst Ahmed Al Noaimi won the medal for best gross score (76).

Other prize winners were: 1st Flight – 1st Ahmed Al Noaimi (71/76), 2nd Sultan Ahmed (71/80), 3rd Abdulla Mubarak (71/81). 2nd Flight – 1st Abdul Elah Fakhroo (72/84), 2nd Ahmed Mohammed (72/86), 3rd Chris Gregory (73/85). 3rd Flight – Rajesh Khanna (71/92), 2nd Yoy Young (72/112), 3rd Alan Staunton (73/101).

Club Captain Abdul Elah Fakhroo also announced the imminent departure of one of the club’s leading lights, current president Alan Goulden, retiring after 35 years in Bahrain.

Presenting a commemorative plaque, Fakhroo described Goulden’s long service to the club and highlighted his nine years serving on the committee.

It is believed that Goulden and his wife plan to settle on the south coast of England to be near their family.
