Last weekend was a furore of colours, cowboys, show jumping, games and fashion combining and complementing each other.
On Friday a Wild West extravaganza was staged at the Muharraq Riding Centre, which was decked out in style, complete with wagons and crazy hats.
Setting the pace for the day were cowboys parading with flags on horses – beautifully attired in colourful costumes – which danced and pranced to the crowd’s delight.
Following the procession, the games began in the arena set up for a series of challenges. It started once reach horse and rider entered through a wooden structure and rung the competition bell. Tests included opening and closing a rope gate, pulling a pony cart for two metres, trotting up and down steps, jumping fences, rearing to command, carrying containers of water through a zig-zag course, and, of course, bull riding, although in this case it was a mechanical bull!
Everyone was a winner with prizes and gifts handed out to all participants, while children watching the action were also treated.
The afternoon concluded with a fashion show by Estbythelna featuring wonderfully vivid, vibrant costumes to showcase the cowboy carnival theme and it proved to be a sumptuous and spectacular end to the day.
* On Saturday, Bahrain Royal Equestrian and Endurance Federation staged its seventh Show Jumping Championship featuring six classes.
In the opening challenge, Junior One, Ali Hani Al Yabis clinched first place riding Ajzal. In Junior Two, Mayoof Al Rumaihi completed the two-phase competition in style with Granus. In the first adult class, Ali A Rasool Ashoor with Horse Pride Chilli claimed the first of his winning double – the pair also won the second of the adult classes.
In the final event, it was down to the invincible duo of Muslim Ali and Pascal to take first prize in both classes. The Grand Prix started with 14 competitors but only two cleared in the first phase –Ali and Salman Faraj. Ali magnificently steered Pascal to the only double-clear of the class and took the title.
* The day took another Western twist with a competition to find the ‘best cowboy’ in show, taking into consideration attire for both horse and rider, saddle, bridle, how the horse was ridden, what the pair could do and, of course, the whole overall look.
