Gulf Weekly Spoils shared in Arsenal derby

IT was crunch time in the GulfWeekly Ladies Football League as both Arsenal teams – Arsenal U21 and Arsenal Ladies – needed a win to top the table in a topsy-turvy season full of thrills and spills.

Arsenal Ladies were off to a flyer in the big derby clash with Rama Salem scoring just three minutes into the game. Things went from bad to worse for Arsenal U21s with Alex Ziegler scoring a second just four minutes later. But with three minutes left of the first period, Gabi Shultz delivered an inspirational chip in the 22nd minute, to take the U21s in at half-time just one goal behind.

Arsenal U21s then came out fighting in the second half and soon were rewarded with Kia Hanahoe scoring her fifth goal of the season just 10 minutes into the half.

Both teams had chances to take the lead, with the best being a two-against-one situation right before the final whistle for Arsenal U21s to steal it but with some great defending from Janet Kellagher, both teams shared the spoils.

This week’s fixtures see bottom-of-the-table RCSI take on top-of-the-table Venus, but with RCSI looking stronger by the game this could have ‘upset’ written all over it. Also, at the Soccer City Stadium in Janabiya, Seef take on Arsenal U21s, still within touching distance of the top, but a loss this week would put a huge dent in any title-winning aspirations.
