MOST golfers in Bahrain try their hardest and, to be honest, often fail miserably, to keep their balls out of the water at the Royal Golf Club.
There’s a notorious hole nine lake on the MINI Monty executive par 3 course which Stan Szecowka, the Editor of this newspaper, claims swallows his drives like a magnet and makes him suffer a regular sinking feeling.
It was with some joy to find that golf is ‘magnifique’ at the Sofitel Bahrain Zallaq Thalassa Sea & Spa where a new playing experience is available on the shores of the beach.
“Players can let the ocean be their driving range and they can enjoy a green activity with golf balls that dissolve into fish food,” explained Yacine Fiher, the hotel’s recreation manager, who said the activity is popular with individuals, families and is even being used by companies as a team-building activity.
A flagged target is placed in the water and you can chip, drive or cleverly skim the waves to try and hit it. The Editor and his son, Stan, 12, tried their hand last weekend and narrowly missed a seagull and scared off a jet-skier. Better luck next time!
