With the summer apparently slowly drawing to a close, Awali Golf Club is gearing up for the new season.

The Eid holiday saw a field of more than 50 players venture out for a fiercely-fought social ‘Texas Scramble’ and the trio of Phil Morrison, Dave Loney and Diane Loney eventually ran out winners with an impressive net 21 shots over the 9-hole competition.

The runners-up, losing on countback also with the same score of 21, were the team of John Parker, Jac Parker and Jill Allison.

With the competition open to both handicapped and non-handicapped players, the scramble format where all players in the team tee off but then players next shoot from the best position, helped many players avoid some of the wilder parts of the course.

Matt Chalmers, the club’s PGA teaching professional, was on hand to offer advice and, occasionally, commiserations. “If your ball lands there you should come and see me,” he said with a smile.

Judging by some of the drives, Chalmers is going to be busy in the coming weeks. Members are now fine-tuning their game ready for the season-opener next Friday, the Captain versus President team matchplay competition.

Chalmers works with players of all standards, from absolute beginner to seasoned pro. He is always ready to support golfers on the island, whether AGC members or not.

Committee member Vidhu Mittal, who organises the club’s social programme, was hard at work calculating the results, providing the prizes and ensuring the refreshments were plentiful and free-flowing with Awali Golf Club’s 19th hole proving once again to be the easiest on the course.
