Gulf Weekly Diaper whacks her way to inaugural trophy

With the commencement of the 2015/16 season at Awali Golf Club (AGC), the Wednesday Whackers, a weekly nine holes of social golf, enters its fourth year of play.

The regular event, open to everyone – non-members as well as members of AGC, handicapped or not – now includes an extra incentive to get out of bed and whack a ball: a monthly trophy and prize in addition to the event’s normal weekly prize.

The trophy has been donated recently to AGC by member Serwin Rampersad, one of the regular Whackers. Its pyramidal base is of a design to allow a name plate for each monthly winner to be added for about 20 years into the future.

As the Wednesday Whackers group includes several non-handicappers, this is perhaps a first opportunity for a beginner to have a winning success recorded for posterity on a trophy.

The monthly winner is decided by the best aggregate three Stableford scores for the month and a score in excess of 54 points is likely to be in contention for the trophy.

After the first four weeks of play during September, three players were clear of the pack – Rampersad having achieved 57 points, Jac Parker 58 points and, edging further ahead, Kerry Diaper with 60 points.

Entering the final round of the month on Wednesday, these three were all in contention. But the scores for this final round witnessed no stunning performances or upsets, no scores being returned by the leaders higher than those that had been achieved previously.

Diaper thus became the inaugural winner of the trophy, Rampersad presenting it together with an accompanying prize.

Diaper’s Whacker’s handicap was 28 at the beginning of the month, but following her success it has plummeted to 19 and is now six shots lower than her Awali Club handicap.

So it will be no surprise if she is seen on the podium later this season after playing in regular weekend competitions.
