The two-man team of Sanjeev Bhalla and Nathan Sundaresan were overall winners with 43 points in the BMMI Johnnie Walker Foursomes competition held at the Awali Golf Club (AGC) on Saturday.

Played in warm and humid conditions with only the afternoon players getting relief from a light wind, 32 teams of two players took part in the contest.

This is the 43rd year that AGC has hosted a BMMI-titled event and the competition was intense with only six points separating the top 10 teams.

The format was 18-holes Foursomes Stableford with the teams of two players playing alternate shots until holing the ball.

Tee-shots were also played alternately and the canny teams knew that all the par-3s are on even numbered holes and planned their tactics accordingly. The less canny – two of the teams – did not check the rules before play and were disqualified for playing two balls instead of one.

The Johnnie Walker Foursomes Cup dating back to 1967/1968 was presented to the overall winning team by Rohan D’souza, BMMI brand manager, who also awarded prizes to second-placed Ahmed Al Noaimi/Essa A. Abdulla (41), Ali Al Kowari/Mohammed A Salmeen (40) in third, Ariette Paul/Bill Scarth on countback (40) in fourth and fifth-placed Salem Khalifa/Abdulla Sultan Faraj (39).

Prizes for ‘nearest the pin in 2 shots’ were awarded to Mohammed Al Fudallah/Sultan Ahmed, Ahmed Al Noaimi/ Essa A Abdulla and Pete Rogers/Petri Kettunen.
